FAQ....

I have heard of Reinhard Klein and Slowly Sideways but what is Slowly Sideways (UK)?
There is only one Slowly Sideways and Reinhard Klein runs that. The suffix (UK) is just a term given to the register of its UK participants prepared by Stephen Davies.
Do you organise participation in events in the UK?
To date no. But we would like to be given the opportunity to do so. The idea is to encourage participation with Reinhard in Europe whilst arranging for future participation in one or two events closer to the UK.
Can I join the ‘Club’?
Slowly Sideways is not a club but a group of ‘friends’ with a passion for their car and all things rally. If you have an appropriate car and want to join in, then let us know.
Looking at the entry list for the Rally of the Lakes in Ireland, the Slowly Sideways cars all seem to be Group B
Is this correct?
Mainly – but only because so far it is just the owners of Group B cars that have come forward.
Does Slowly Sideways accept ‘replicas’?
Yes - and No. If a particular famous car is not available to us, then a very good ‘replica’ is considered. Most of our present ‘replicas’ also have their own rally history.
I have heard that you have a cut-off date of 1986. Is this correct ?
Yes. However we accept a small number of important rally cars from the post-1986 period. They need to be proper ex-works cars. Group N cars are not accepted.
I have a suitable car. Can I compete in rallies with Slowly Sideways?
No. Please remember that we do not compete. We merely demonstrate our cars. There is a considerable difference.
How do I demonstrate my car with Slowly Sideways?
A rally organiser may ask for a certain number of cars to run over their special stages at the convenience of the Clerk of the Course. We may run all the stages or just some. It all depends on timing.
What is the relationship between Slowly Sideways and the rally organisers ?
Certainly a friendly one! Slowly Sideways is not a rally organiser itself, but just introduces owners to the opportunity of demonstrating their cars on other people’s rallies.
Do I complete a Slowly Sideways (UK) entry form ?
No. You complete an entry form provided by the particular organiser for the rally at which you are demonstrating your car. Slowly Sideways (UK) does not organise rallies in its own right.
Do I need a competition licence?
No. To date no rally organiser has required this. Don’t forget, we are not competing.
What about insurance?
This is up to the individual. Of course, liaison sections are run on open public roads and thus you need road traffic insurance for the country in which you are travelling.. You need to abide by the laws of the land. Rally organisers normally obtain ‘Third Party’ insurance for all cars running on closed roads of their special stages, that normally includes us. You must check with your own insurance provider as to the cover your policy gives you. If in doubt, consult a specialist broker.
Do I have to pay an entry fee?
Whenever possible we try to negotiate free entry. But do remember rally organisers can only take a certain number of cars. They need paying entrants to meet their budget. For us it s more important to be properly integrated into an event then to be cheap.
Will my car have to go through Scrutineering?
When our cars run on special stages within Ireland and the UK – yes. Other countries within Europe have different approaches, there normally – no.
What Scrutineering criteria are set by Slowly Sideways?
None. Slowly Sideways does not set scrutineering criteria. The Clerk of the Course of the particular rally with his Chief Scrutineer sets these. Any special requirements that must be met will be set out in the rally regulations. Wherever possible, Slowly Sideways will make sure you have access to the information you need in order to be able to comply. The same consideration applies to the use of crash helmets and fireproof overalls, both are compulsory on all our events.
Can I run ‘racing slicks’ on my car?
In most cases ‘No’. You must abide by the laws of the land. If you wish to run tyres other than normal road legal ones you must consult the Rally’s Regulations to see if there is any dispensation.
Do I have to have experience in competitive rallies to be considered by Slowly Sideways ?
No But this is not to say that rally organisers some times may ask about the experience of those coming to drive on their stages. Almost without exception, all ‘UK’ friends have competition experience or have acquired it on previous demonstration runs.
I have heard that Slowly Sideways has a great social side?
Yes of course. We always arrange an end of rally party !
With such a small number of ‘friends’ does Slowly Sideways tend to be a bit off-putting to someone new ?
Not at all. We all share the same passion for our sport, and all newcomers are made most welcome if their car fits nicely into the group..
Obviously participation will involve a certain amount of travel, etc. Does Slowly Sideways organise any of this for me ?
No. We do however organise your hotel should you wish. This enables us all to be together in one place.
My car is very valuable. What security is available?
Slowly Sideways cannot be responsible for your car. This is down to you. On certain rallies, a patrolled parc-fermé is available but this is always at your own risk. We try to make things as easy as possible for you to reduce risk to the minimum.
Will I get to meet famous rally drivers?
Yes, of course. Most of the rallies will see you rubbing shoulders with a variety of famous names. And many of them often demonstrate cars with us.
